Creamy Nutella Frosting

In a world full of muffins, be a cupcake...a cupcake with Nutella frosting.

Nutella and I go way back. So many good times. So many memories. Break ups, pregnancies, celebrations, lonely nights...Thursdays. Nutella has always been there. It's never let me down. If you've never experienced Nutella you are missing out on a wonderful relationship. A dark, decadent, smooth, cocoa filled, hazelnutty relationship that never stops giving. Do yourself a favor, go out and get a jar. And a spoon. Make a new friend.

I love Nutella so much I want to take it everywhere, introduce it to everyone and everything, starting with my cupcakes. Nutella is a masterful blend of hazelnuts and cocoa, making my favorite chocolate cupcake the perfect companion. Find my chocolate cupcake recipe here

Given Nutella's richness, I thought the tanginess of a cream cheese frosting base would pair perfectly, highlighting the cocoa flavor. I've added many things to my cream cheese frosting recipe: Ground Oreo cookies, peanut butter, lemon zest, maple syrup, even whiskey (another wonderful relationship). All amazing. Turns out, everyone is welcome at a cream cheese party. And let me tell you, Nutella is no exception. Instant BFFs, in fact.

If you love Nutella as much as I do, this is your frosting. It's perfectly rich, without being over the top, it's creamy and smooth, it's full of chocolate flavor. I mean, come on...it's Nutella. Introduce yourself.

Creamy Nutella Frosting

* Makes enough to frost about 18 cupcakes

  • 8 oz cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2/3 cup Nutella
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • pinch of salt
  1. In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, beat the butter, cream cheese, and Nutella until smooth.
  2. On low speed, slowly add the powdered sugar and salt. Mix until light and fluffy.

Note: To create the rosette swirl on these cupcakes, I used a Wilton 1M piping tip. Start at the center of the cupcake, with the tip perpendicular, and circle outward, in a clockwise motion.

ENJOY!
